Day two of Heartland Baseball's first Winter Classic Tournament, the Hawks played the first two games of the four-game day. To start off, Heartland would take on the Kankakee Community College Cavaliers, followed by another 7-inning game against the Kirkwood Community College Eagles.
The first game against the Cavaliers was an offensive battle as the Hawks were unable to find a spark to string hits together. Through the windy morning, centerfielder
Bennett Summers made solid contact, collecting two hits with a homerun in the bottom of the 6th to provide Heartland with their solo run of the day. The pitching staff rolled through the seven innings with sophomore
Ryan Anderson starting with two innings pitched, only allowing two hits and one run while sitting down two batters. Following his performance was
Kasey Griffin, who threw a total of four innings. Closing things out for Game 1, another sophomore,
Nick Tickle, finished with one inning pitched, facing six batters. Collectively, the staff added six strikeouts and only allowed two walks through 33 batters faced.
The Hawks made a quick turnaround to face the Eagles of Kirkwood College, which was a back-and-forth endeavor from the beginning.
Dylan Nagle stepped on the mound to start the game. The pitcher gave up five hits and five runs over four innings, striking out six. Tyler Pippen went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hawks with an RBI. The hitters were able to add on seven hits with four runs.
Jake Gimbel and Deven Tupper finished things off on the mound with four strikeouts, three hits, and only allowed three runs.
The Hawks returned to the Corn Crib tomorrow, February 27th,  to compete against Madison College in a single seven-inning game.
