Softball Earns First Two Wins of Season in Florida

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

On day one of the Hawks' spring trip the softball team kicked off Florida play, and their 2022 season, with a double header against Muskegon Community College and Erie Community College. At the end of day one, the Hawks took home two wins and a perfect 2-0 start to the season.

In game one, the Hawks faced-off against Muskegon Community College. Coming from Michigan and participating in DII Region XII, the Jayhawks entered the match-up with a perfect 8-0 record on the season. Last year, the Jayhawks finished their 2021 season with a record of 31-8.

The game was tied at one heading into the sixth inning, but wouldn't stay that way long. The Hawks would explode for six runs in the top half of the inning, capped off by a Kaci Shickel three-run homerun. The Hawks would add one more run in the seventh to eventually bring home a 8-1 win and their first win of the 2022 season.

The Hawks' offense in game one was led by sophomore Charlie Sartoris. Sartoris was on base three times with two hits and a walk. Sartoris also scored three runs and stole a base. Making her Heartland debut, freshman Addisyn Miller also chipped in two hits, three RBIs and a run scored.

Sophomore, Kaci Shickel, led the Hawks in the circle as she picked up her first win of the season. Shickel picked up ten strikeouts and allowed just one run as she threw a complete game for the Hawks.

The Hawks would later face off against Erie Community College in game two of both the day and the season. Coming from Buffalo, New York, the Kats compete in the NJCAA DII Region III and are members of the Western New York Athletic Conference.

The Hawks' offense came out hot scoring three runs in both the first and second inning. The offense was once again led by Sartoris and Miller. Sartoris picked up three more hits and scored two runs in game two. Miller chipped in two RBIs and two runs scored. Freshman, Madison Steines, picked up her first hit as a Hawk on a two RBI triple. Steines also drew two walks.

Game two starter, Blair Jacobus, earned her first win of the season as she threw 4.1 innings. Jacobus allowed no earned runs and picked up five strikeouts in her sophomore pitching debut. Miller and Shickel would combine to get the final eight outs of the game and secure the 6-2 win for the Hawks.

The Hawks are back in action tomorrow as they take on Monroe College and Muskegon Community College in another doubleheader set for 3:45 pm and 6 pm ET.
