Heartland softball split a pair of doubleheaders to begin the week, with the first coming at Lincoln Land on Monday before playing host to Triton College on Wednesday. The Hawks also completed a suspended game with Lincoln Land from last month on Monday, ultimately falling to the Loggers 9-7 in eight innings. The Hawks currently sit at 21-25 (7-9) overall on the season.
Â
Game 1
After resuming the suspended contest with Lincoln Land from March 22 and dropping a 9-7 decision, the Hawks rebounded for a 5-2 victory over the Loggers in game one of Monday's twin bill. An RBI-single by
Erin Anderson put the Hawks out in front at 1-0 after the first inning. The Loggers would tie the contest at 1-1 in the second before
Raeghan Morefield laced a run-scoring double in the third and the Hawks were back in front 2-1.
Â
Shayne Immke added a two-run triple in the fourth before
Ellie Downing scored Immke with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-1. The Loggers would score one tally in the fourth, but
Morgan Malone finished the contest with three shutout innings to secure the victory.
Landes Benedict finished with two hits for the Hawks.
Â
Game 2
The series finale was not as favorable for the Hawks, as the Loggers picked up a 6-5 walk-off win. Downing started the scoring for the Hawks in the first with an RBI-groundout, but Lincoln Land scored twice in the bottom of the frame to take a 2-1 lead. The home team would add two more tallies in the second, and another in the fourth to make it 5-1.
Â
After singles by Immke, Downing and
Concetta DeBord to begin the sixth frame, Madi Smith launched a three-run homer to left field to put the Hawks to within a run at 5-4. A Downing RBI-single in the seventh tied the contest at 5-5, but the Loggers walked it off in the bottom of the frame with a base-knock with two outs.
Â
Game 3
Heartland returned home for a pair of games with Triton College. In a pitcher's duel in the opening game, the Hawks fell 3-1 to the Trojans. The game featured just eight hits between the two teams, with Triton scoring a run in each of the first three frames. Morefield supplied the only run for the Hawks with a run-scoring single in the sixth.
Â
Mikaela Salisbury threw well for the Hawks in defeat, throwing a complete game and yielding three runs (two earned) on five hits.
Â
Game 4
The Hawks responded with a 10-2 win in five frames in the second game of the afternoon over the Trojans. An Immke double followed by a Smith single scored two runs for the Hawks in the opening frame. Immke followed with a two-run shot in the second as the Hawks led 4-0.
Â
An error by the Trojans allowed one more Heartland run to cross in the third. Triton's McKenzie Johnson narrowed the deficit with a two-run single in the fourth to make it 5-2. The Hawks would score a run in the bottom-half on an Anderson sacrifice fly to make it 6-2.
Â
After
Kennadi Rico walked and
Lilly Hicks singled to begin the fifth frame, a wild pitch and a DeBord double, followed by an Immke two-run home run ended the contest at 10-2. Immke finished going 3-3 with two home runs, three runs scored, a double and five RBI's for the Hawks. Malone registered the win for the Hawks, allowing two runs on three hits, with four strikeouts.
Â
The Hawks return to action at 1 pm Saturday for a doubleheader against John Wood at The Corn Crib.
