Over the weekend, the Heartland Hawks traveled to participate in the Region 24 B Tournament hosted by the Danville Area Community College Jaguars in Danville, Illinois. Within this tournament, the Hawks ranked second, with Lewis and Clark Community College as third.
On Saturday, May 2nd, the Hawks stepped onto the field to play the LCCC Trailblazers, determining who would face the DACC Jaguars.
The offense started hot and never let up against Lewis and Clark, scoring in five out of six innings played. A single from the leadoff batter,
Kendall Lowery, got the momentum started. She ended up scoring on a passed ball to plate the first run of the game. After getting up 2-0 in the first inning, Lowery improved the score again in the following inning when she doubled to left field to score the designated hitter,
Araceli Condie-Espinosa. Espinosa added a two-run RBI single in the bottom of the third, putting the Hawks up 5-0. Lowery led the Hawks at the plate, going three-for-three with three runs, an RBI, and a walk.
Keearrah Brown took the mound for the Hawks, where she kept the Trailblazers at bay. The freshman allowed two runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out three. With the combination of a tight defense and active offense, the Hawks ended game one in the bottom of the sixth, run-ruling the Trailblazers 10-2.
The Danville Area Jaguars awaited the Hawks shortly after game one, where the team continued their performances from game one. Both teams scored a run in the first inning, itching to grab a lead early on. The second inning was all offense for the Hawks when
Olivia Kobel and
Sienna Aragones both reached base on balls, providing Lowery with another opportunity to drive in runs. She did exactly that with her second line drive for a hit to left to score both base runners. A single from
Sophia Beckett scored Lowery the following at-bat. The last run of the game would be batted in by sophomore
Shelby Oakley to improve their lead to 5-1, creating the final score of game two, thanks to the performance by the defense.
Tayla Eaves worked the mound against the Jaguars, throwing the seven innings. Only six hits were allowed against 29 batters with one walk and one strikeout. The defense worked on keeping the opposing team's bats at bay with multiple diving plays and routine pop-ups being made by the outfielders, Aragones, Lowery, and Beckett.
With the day of wins, the Hawks would return to Danville, where they awaited the winner of LCCC versus DACC.
Danville Area ended up coming out on top against the Trailblazers, resulting in the Jaguars joining the Hawks for the Championship game.
Despite their strong performance on the first day, the Hawks were unable to come out on top against the Jaguars, falling twice, 3-12 and 1-10, respectively. The
Hawks concluded the season on a great weekend and fought to stay alive with strong performances across the lineup. While the end of the season came quickly, the team evolved on and off the field, and we're excited to see what the future holds for the athletes and the program.
