This weekend, the Heartland Baseball Team took on the Lewis and Clark Community College Trailblazers on April 17th and 18th. The offense had a strong outing across all four games, scoring 49 runs with 10 home runs and 16 walks. The pitching staff also put on a performance, with 14 runs allowed and 23 strikeouts.
The series started in Godfrey, Illinois, where the Hawks didn't waste any time putting runs on the board. Dom Koostra found the bases in all four at-bats, starting things off in the first when he was hit by a pitch. A walk by him with the bases loaded in the second inning plated the Hawks' first run. Rounding out his performance at the plate and giving Heartland their 10th run, the leftfielder hit a solo homerun in the fifth and final inning of game one. Including three hits to the Hawks' 12 hit total were
Bennett Summers and
TJ Jakubowski.
On the mound, throwing five innings without a run scored was
Trevor Rehnstrom. The sophomore saw 21 batters with six hits allowed. Rehnstrom finished his outing with only 84 pitches thrown, walking one and striking out five. Both the offense and defense had good showings; the Hawks took the first game 11-0.
Game two held another strong performance for the Heartland lineup once again. A duo on the mound for the Hawks helped secure the win when
Dylan Nagle and
Andy Antonacci threw a combined seven innings. The starter, Nagle, threw the majority of the game at 6 IP, facing 26 batters. The sophomore only allowed two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts. Antonacci finished things out, facing seven batters with two runs and two hits allowed.
The Hawks at the plate provided another strong outing with 11 hits and seven walks.
Jimmy Anderson had a two-hit game, where he had a solo shot in the top of the 6th, and
Daniel Bastidas, Jakubowski, and Summers each added two hits apiece.
Jake Troyner found the bases in every at-bat without a hit when he added four walks and a run. Hawks took game two 8-4 and were ready to come back for day two.
Heartland was at the Corn Crib the following afternoon, hoping to repeat their previous performance, and they did exactly that.
Games one and two were all Hawks when they scored 30 runs. Game one was a 12-hit day with a quarter of those coming from home runs brought by
Chase Peterson,
Jake Parpet, Bastidas, and Troyner. The real shutout performance was on the mound, where
Jake Gimbel kept the Trailblazers bats quiet. Across the five innings and 20 batters faced, the sophomore didn't allow a single run or walk with five strikeouts. Game one was a quick one where Peterson walked it off 10-0.
Game two was a high-scoring affair where Peterson added another home run in the fifth inning and ended with three hits, three runs, and two RBIs. Troyner was patient at the plate again two walks and two hits with three runs scored.
Kasey Griffin,
Tyler Ledvina, and
Casey Giemzik made a collective effort in the field, allowing eight earned runs, walking three, and striking out four. The Hawks ended the final game of the series 20-10.
The Hawks return to conference play next weekend when they face the Lincoln Land Loggers.
