Heartland Baseball Takes Two of Four in Hard-Fought Conference Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4
Heartland Community College filled the weekend with the Hawks facing the Spoon River College Snappers on March 28th and 29th.

Game one at the Corn Crib was a low-scoring nine-inning game as the Hawks were unable to get on the board. Able to get the ball in play, Jimmy Anderson and Tyler Pippen collected two hits apiece. Bennett Summers got in on the action, bunting himself onto base in the bottom of the fifth. The position players were also keeping the innings short by turning two double plays in the game. Trevor Rehnstrom started on the mound for the Hawks. The right-handed pitcher gave up six hits and one earned run over seven innings, striking out six and walking two. Heartland Baseball ultimately fell to Spoon River 0-2 through the entire nine innings.

Game two was a different story, with the bats turning hot for both teams, with the seven-inning game going into extras. Starting on the mound for the Hawks was sophomore Ryan Anderson. Throwing 2.2 innings, the right-hander allowed seven runs on eight hits. Following his performance was Andy Antonacci with 2.1 innings pitched and one run allowed through 12 batters.
Jake Parpet ignited the spark for the Hawks in the bottom of the second with a solo homerun to left field. Heartland was able to collect 12 hits in the game. Anderson and Summers each collected two hits in their five at-bats. Anderson was lethal on the bases with two stolen bases and two runs scored. The Hawks were playing catch-up throughout the game as the Snappers scored seven in the first three innings. At the start of the bottom of the seventh inning, the Hawks were down one run and needed a spark to keep the game alive. Cam Steignbaugh drew a walk for the offense and stayed on first for two outs. It wasn't until the centerfielder, Bennett Summers, hit a hard groundball that led to an error by Spoon River's third baseman that ultimately sent Steinbaugh home to tie up the game at eight.
Shutting down the Snapper offense was freshman pitcher Devan Tupper, throwing through innings in relief. Tupper allowed one hit and zero runs, while striking out four, with three of those coming in the top of the seventh inning to hold their lead to one. Parpet, who started the offense for the Hawks, would also be the hitter to finish it. With two outs, Chase Peterson was able to reach first on an error, putting him at first. Parpet stepped to the plate and hit his second homerun of the season to walk off the game 10-8.

The following day, Heartland traveled to Canton, Illinois, to finish their conference series.

In game one, Tyler Dowling started on the mound for the pitching staff, throwing three innings. Completing the game was sophomore Casey Giemzik holding off Spoon to no runs. Through 11 batters, Giemzik only allowed two hits and struck out a total of six. The Hawks' offense stayed pretty quiet until the third inning. Offensively, the bats weren't able to connect across the lineup until freshman Cole Yates singled on a line drive to left and shortly after advanced to second on a Summers line drive. Scoring the first run was Yates on a groundout from TJ Jakubowski in the top of the third inning. A lead-off triple from Anderson started things off once again for the offense as he was able to score on a wild pitch. In the following inning, two more runs would score, but it was not enough as the Hawks took the loss to the Snappers, 4-6.

Game two was Heartland's ballgame once again as they came out on top due to a huge fourth-inning outing. Anderson led off the inning with a home run to tie the game at one. Dom Kooistra drew a walk, and right after, catcher Daniel Bastidas was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with no outs. Jake Troyner singled to score a run and advanced to second. Steinbaugh kept his bat hot with a double to score two more, improving their lead to 4-1. Troyner ended on top for the offense with two hits in four at-bats with two runs and two RBIs.
On the mound for the Hawks, Jake Gimbel threw a total of six innings and faced 27 batters. The lefty put on a strong performance to keep the Snappers at bay. With one run scored on four hits, the sophomore was hard to hit as he collected nine strikeouts to round out his appearance. Freshman Kasey Griffin came in for 1.1 innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with two strikeouts. Closing out the nine-inning game, right-handed hurler Dylan Nagle ended facing nine batters with one hit and one run with three strikeouts. The pitching staff closed things out with 10 hits, three earned runs, and 14 strikeouts. Due to the offensive and defensive performance, the Hawks won game two 6-4.

With the Spoon River split, the Hawks improve their record to 17-10 and 8-4 in conference. They take the week to recover before traveling to Quincy, where they will start another conference series against the John Wood Community College Blazers.
