Heartland Community College continued their weekend at the Showtime Classic in Branson, Missouri. A doubleheader in the morning was in store for the Hawks as they faced Jefferson College and Rock Valley College, respectively.
The first game against the Vikings was a back-and-forth battle at the plate. Though the first two and a half innings were scoreless, the Hawks opened things up at the bottom of the third.
Nataliha Oleniczak started things off by getting on base, and
Kendall Lowery walked to add two runners on base. With a sac bunt from Jenna Atkinson, moving the runners in scoring position, it gave first basemen
Shelby Oakley two RBIs on her double to left field, moving the Hawks ahead of the Vikings. Jefferson College responded the next inning, tying things up at two and eventually pulling ahead in the fifth inning to take the lead. As the Hawks entered their last opportunity to score, the top of the came through once again as Lowery singles, Adkins reached on error, and Oakley added another RBI to her total, tying the game at three.
Keearrah Brown came through for the Hawks with a sacrifice fly to center to advance Adkins home as they walked it off 4-3. Brown not only showed up at the plate, but also on the mound as she threw six innings, allowing seven hits, two runs, and sitting down one batter.
Tayla Eaves came in to close, facing four batters and striking out one.
Immediately after, the Hawks took on the #8 nationally-ranked Rock Valley for another seven-inning game. Eaves started on the mound, and the team was able to hold off the Golden Eagles to one run till the bottom of the fifth. The right-handed pitcher faced 21 batters, allowing six hits and one walk while sitting down five. Freshman Jade Gonet came in to finish for the Hawks, only letting up one run on one hit with two strikeouts to end the evening. At the plate, the offense struggled to keep up as
Sienna Aragones and Bella Johnson were the only two Hawks to collect a hit, while Oakley and Johnson added on a walk each.
With the split today, the Hawks were able to keep their .500 record, moving to 3-3. As Heartland heads back home, they will take the week to prepare for the weekend doubleheader on March 7th. The team will head to South Holland to compete against South Suburban College.
