Over the weekend, Softball took on the Region 24 Tournament at Illinois Central College in East, Peoria, Illinois. To advance to the championship game, the Hawks had to pass the Danville Jaguars to face the ICC Cougars.
Saturday afternoon was an intense back-and-forth endeavor as the Jaguars walked it off as the Hawks were on the wrong end of the 5-6 game. The offense was still hard at work outhitting Danville 12 to 10.
Concetta DeBord and
Shayne Immke collected three hits each for Heartland. Immke picked up two RBIs, one that came in the first inning to start the game and another in the fifth to get them the 4-3 lead.
Rylee Koeller and
Cara Farnam also snagged a couple of hits for the Hawks.
Brooklyn Ogden opened the game on the mound giving up nine hits and five runs through 5.1 innings pitched. The righty sat down five batters, only allowing one free base.
After the loss, the Hawks returned the following day to face the Jaguars in a final chance to advance.
Sunday held an extra-inning battle that ended with Heartland on top with a 10-9 victory in the ninth. Immke led the Hawks once again at the plate by showing strength and patience. The sophomore shortstop went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run in the first. She also collected three walks and two runs to add to the final. DeBord contributed two hits, runs, and walks. The Hawks had a total of 11 hits with seven walks which made the difference in the contest. Sophomore Farnam started on the mound throwing 4.1 innings allowing six runs (four earned) and seven hits.
Tayla Eaves came in for relief in the last 3.2 innings. The freshman allowed one earned run and five hits.
The following game was the Championship matchup against the Illinois Central Cougars. ICC started things off by getting on board with a run in the first inning. Hawks would strike back in the top of the second with a double from
Bailey Brooks scoring two. Once the game was tied,
Rylee Koeller brought the lead back to Heartland with a single scoring one making the score 3-2. Immke led the Hawks in hits with three in four at-bats. The team collected a total of eight total hits and five walks in the 4-10 loss. Ogden took the mound once again facing 19 batters through 3.1 innings pitched.
Tayla Eaves followed for 2.0 innings before
Kendyl Hurt ended the game in 0.2 innings. The pitching staff let up 12 hits and four strikeouts across the board.
The Heartland Softball team ended 18-26-1 on the year, going 11-13 in the conference.
