This week's conference matchup saw the Heartland Hawks (23-11) face the Lewis & Clark Trailblazers (19-15). The Hawks took the series 4-0, collecting 52 hits and 39 runs throughout all four games.
Heartland hosted games one and two of the series at the Corn Crib in Normal.
Jacob O'Day started at the mound for the Hawks giving up seven hits and four runs. The starter faced 18 batters and sat down two with only one freebase. After pitching three innings,
Patrick Gardner came in at relief earning the win, throwing the rest of the 9-inning game. The left-handed pitcher collected three strikeouts and only gave up one run through five innings. Defensively, the infield was able to keep the Trailblazers at bay by turning three double plays throughout the contest. The Hawks put in the work at the plate scoring in five innings with a total of 17 hits.
Kaden Griffitts and
Max Hennemann each had a solo homerun to left center to add to the defense. Griffitts led the Hawks going 4 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs. The final for game one was 12-5 in favor of the Hawks.
Game two started shortly after where the Hawks wasted no time to get back on top.
Logan Barnett started at the mound giving up 10 hits and only four runs that came in the first and last innings. The defense put in the work once again, committing no errors in the field with another double play turned. The Hawks got to work at the plate scoring five runs on five hits in the 2nd to pull ahead with some cushion. The team collected 14 runs on 15 hits in five innings.
Tony Konopiots walked it off after going 2 for 2 with two runs and three RBIs. Heartland took game two of the series 14-4 and was ready to take two more the following day.
The bats were hot once again for the Hawks as they collected 10 hits during the contest on Saturday.
Jimmy Anderson led the team going 2 for 3 with a walk, a stolen bag, and three RBIs.
Dylan Nagle showed up on the mound pitching all seven innings only allowing four hits and two walks. The freshman tacked on three strikeouts and was able to hold the Trailblazers to no runs after facing 24 batters. The score for the third game of the series, Hawks: 8 v. Trailblazers: 0
The final game to finish the conference series left Heartland with a late lead. The Hawks pitching staff came to work as right-handed pitcher
Jimmy Amptmann, was the starter for game three surrendering five hits and two runs through five innings pitched.
Jake Gimbel followed throwing three innings, allowing three hits and sitting down three batters.
Ryan Anderson collected the save coming in with a clean inning giving up no hits or runs. In the field, the defense was able to turn two more double plays making that nine total over all four games. Henneman sat in the leadoff position and led the Hawks to the win with a double in the top of the seventh to bring in the winning run. The sophomore also collected two hits in four at-bats with a walk. The team collected 10 hits over 34 at-bats.
Baseball is on the road all week starting in Mattoon on Tuesday to face Lake Land College in a nine-inning matchup. April 18th and 19th holds a conference matchup against Vincennes down in Indiana.
