After falling in its opening-round matchup against fifth-seeded St. Johns River State, fourth-seeded Heartland baseball faced elimination in a consolation bracket matchup against ninth-seeded Des Moines Area Community College Monday at the NJCAA DII World Series at David Allen Memorial Ballpark in Enid, Okla. Despite taking an early lead in the first inning, the Hawks would ultimately fall 16-7 to the Bears in eight innings to conclude their season at 43-18 overall.
Â
DMACC would score twice in the top of the first before the Hawks responded with three tallies in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 advantage. Following singles by
TJ Williams and
Jesse Contreras to begin the home half of the first,
Corey Boyette launched a three-run homer to make it 3-2.
Â
The Bears countered with six runs in the second to regain an 8-3 advantage. Run-scoring singles by
Cale Steinbaugh and
Kaden Griffitts narrowed the deficit to 8-5 in the bottom of the second. An RBI-groundout by Contreras in the fourth cut the lead to 8-6.
Â
From there, DMACC would score twice in both the sixth and seventh frames. A
Brady Davidson RBI-double in the seventh made it 12-7, but the Bears scored four more times in the eighth to take the victory. Williams, Contreras, Steinbaugh and
Beau Polickey each had a pair of hits for the Hawks.
