Box Score 4 The Hawks had a busy week as baseball and softball kicked off their seasons. Meanwhile, the Hawks volleyball team continued competition as they kicked off a five-game home stand. Throughout the week, the Hawks picked up six wins and only one loss.
Volleyball kicked off the action this week with a game on Wednesday (2/24) against John Wood Community College. The Hawks won in three sets with scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-15. Freshman,
Emma Clark, led the Hawks with 9 kills, 2 aces and 15 digs. The Hawks carried the momentum into Friday (2/26) as Lewis & Clark came to town. The Hawks swiftly beat the Trailblazers in three straight sets with scores of 25-6, 25-9, 25-9.
Head coach,
Mary Frahm, comments on her team's performance this week, "It's important to us as a first year program that we compete right away. I think we found our rhythm and showcased that this week. I'm proud of the effort all around." The Hawks look to stay unbeaten at home next week as they host Spoon River Community College (3/3) and a tri with Illinois Central College and Southwestern Illinois College (3/6).
The Hawks softball team joined in on the action Friday (2/26) as they traveled to the Louisville Slugger Dome in Peoria to play a double-header against Waubonsee Community College. The Hawks came home with two wins under their belt as they beat the Chiefs 16-11 and 12-7. The hot bats of the Hawks were sparked by sophomore,
Macey McElravy. McElravy had three homeruns on the day for the Hawks.
With the wins, head coach,
Casey Jefferson, picked up her first career win as a head coach for the Hawks. Jefferson reflects on the day, "Proud of the way we competed in our first two games of the season. Everyone contributed in some way. You can tell they missed it after a year of no competition. This team has a lot of fight and I'm looking forward to see that continue throughout the season."
Rounding out the action for the week was the Hawks baseball team. The baseball team opened their season as they hosted Triton College in a 9 inning game on Saturday (2/27). The Hawks took a 4-0 lead thanks to homeruns from
Jeremy Figueroa and
Jaylen Heard. However, the Trojans battled back, posting 3 runs in the 9
th inning, to beat the Hawks 8-5.
The Hawks came back strong on Sunday (2/28) as they hosted Morton College in a double-header. The Hawks won game one in five innings, 13-3. In game two, Hawks battled back from an early deficit and pulled out a 12-9 win.
Jaylen Heard,
Ryan Maher and
Riley Rundquist all had homeruns for the Hawks in game two of the double-header.
Head coach,
Chris Razo, comments on opening weekend, "Anytime we get to play baseball that's a good day. We have a long way to go as a team but we are happy to come out of the weekend 2-1." The Hawks are back in action this week as they host Lake Land College and Muskegon Community College on Tuesday and Wednesday.
