Heartland Baseball Splits their Day-Night Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
After the Heartland Baseball team took a trip to Iowa, they returned to the Corn Crib on Tuesday, April 7th, to play a doubleheader against the Rock Valley Community College Golden Eagles.

After the Golden Eagles got on the scoreboard first, the Hawks responded the next inning and never let up the lead the remainder of the seven innings. In the bottom of the first inning, Heartland went back into the lead after TJ Jakubowski hit a sac fly, and Jake Troyner flew out, each scoring one run. A single by Dom Kooistra and a groundout by Jakubowski helped the Hawks extend their lead in the second. Kooistra and Bennett Summers were a force together in the lineup, as they both collected two hits apiece. The base runners were able to take five stolen bases through the game, two coming from Kooistra.
Casey Giemzik stepped onto the mound first for the Hawks. The hurler allowed four hits and three earned runs over 2.1 innings, striking out and walking three. Freshman Jack Olsen finished things up, throwing to 16 batters. The right-handed pitcher allowed three hits and no runs through 4.2 innings with a strikeout in the fifth. The Hawks stayed strong in the field, committing no errors and executing a double play to end the game with Heartland on top, 6-4.

Game two started off quickly when the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the first off of Cooper Kubinski. Sophomore, Michael Belbot, came in to follow for two innings with no runs allowed on two hits with two strikeouts against eight batters. Andy Antanocci threw the majority of the game with three innings pitched. The right-hander only allowed one run and one hit, with the fifth inning happening on the mound with three consecutive strikeouts.
Kooistra led the lineup once again with two hits through four at-bats. A double in the third from the freshman put the Hawks on the board to score for Summers. After five hits and three runs, Heartland fell short to Rock Valley 3-4.

The Heartland Hawks take the rest of the week off before returning to the Corn Crib for the weekend in a conference series against Vincennes University on April 10th and 11th.
