Over the weekend, the Heartland Men's and Women's Soccer teams hosted conference opponent John Wood from Quincy, IL. Both teams gave a valiant effort in attempts to improve their records and momentum going into next week. With the competition starting in the afternoon, the heat wasn't the only thing that started hot for the day. Collectively, the Hawks were able to gather 21 goals and hold the Blazers without a goal for each men's and women's team.
Men's Soccer
The men's team started play at the Corn Crib on the 13th, and once the scoring began, it was hard for them to stop. A penalty kick opened the gate as
Guilherme Tomas found himself shooting in the 3rd minute. After,
Vincent Pratt assisted
Amin Zamani and
Gabriel Tonks in getting the ball to the back of the net. After getting up 3-0, the Hawks stayed steady, tacking on three more before the end of the half. Tomas not only added a second goal to the match but also collected a hat trick, as
Archie Collins led him to find the goal. Once again, Pratt contributed another assist, finishing with three for the day. Rounding out the first-half goal fest was sophomore
Nate Adler with an assist from
Keegan Anderson. As the Hawks settled things down, the solo goal in the second half came in the 77th minute from Zamani, with the assist coming from none other than Tomas. The men's team took the game 7-0 with 19 total shots on goal and two saves from the keeper
Soren Goubely Dondaine to save the shutout.
Women's Soccer
The women's team was no different as they put their foot on the gas and never let up, winning in a stunning 14-0 victory. Heartland's attack was relentless, with scoring contributions spread across multiple players and a standout performance from
Valeria Agudelo.
Carla Vizuete and
Josy Rogel each netted three goals, while Vizuete added an assist to her tally and Rogel consistently found the back of the net at key moments.
Alyssa Bovis scored twice, and both Anjelica Amezquia and
Alexandra Mendez added one goal apiece to the total.
Valeria Maldonado had a strong showing with two goals and an assist, capping off a balanced offensive effort. The real playmaker of the match, however, was Agudelo, who not only scored two goals but also recorded six assists, directly influencing eight different scoring plays. Support came from
Dayana Tellez and
Karima Marhabi, who each contributed three assists, helping to fuel Heartland's dominant offensive display.
The women's team takes the rest of the weekend off before returning to play on Monday on September 15th. The men return on the road as they take the trip to Champaign, IL, to face the Parkland Cobras in another conference matchup.
