Baseball Ends the Regular Season with a Bang

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4
This weekend, the Heartland Hawks played their final regular-season games in a conference series against Spoon River College. The offense did not let up, scoring 74 runs through four games, and the defense was sound, only allowing seven runs.

Hawks hosted the Snappers for their first day of competition. The bats put up major numbers from the start with 16 runs in the first inning alone. Through 33 at-bats the lineup put up 21 hits and collected 12 walks. Tony Konopiots and Jake Parpet led the Hawks at the plate both going 3-for-3 with five RBIs and two freebases apiece. Konopiots showcased his swing with a gram slam in the first inning. Through the fourth inning, the offense scored nine runs on two hits with four walks. On the mound, Jacob O'Day started for the pitching staff. The sophomore threw all five innings only allowing three hits and collecting nine strikeouts through 19 batters faced. The position players did not commit a single error with a double play to close out an inning.
The second game started quiet until the second inning where Heartland scored five runs on six hits to take the lead. Max Hennemann added to the chaos with four hits through five ABs. Jesse Contreras, Tommy Atkison, Bennett Summers, and Daniel Bastidas collected multiple hits each with a total of 17 hits across the board. Ryan Anderson held Spoon River to 10 hits and four runs through five innings. Michael Belbot shut the Snapper's offense down through his two-inning appearance without allowing a hit or run. The right-handed freshman sat down three batters out of eight faced.

The following day, the Heartland Hawks picked up right where they left off.

The 20-2 victory in the away matchup was led by first baseman Eli Kieser with four runs driven in on two hits. At the top of the seventh inning, Kieser added another gram slam to the series. In the last inning, the Hawks tallied up 13 runs to enforce the run rule. Atkison added four hits in six at-bats with two runs scored. Freshman Dylan Nagle took the mound all seven innings with seven hits allowed and seven strikeouts.
To round out the series, the Hawks scored four in the first to secure the win. Kaden Griffitts showed up at the plate going 3-for-3 with three runs and a total of four runs batted in. Through 25 ABs, Heartland collected 14 runs on 10 hits compared to the Snapper's 1 run on 1 hit. The lineup continued to show patience at the plate with six free bases. Patrick Gardner was the starter for the final game of the series. In four innings the sophomore pitcher allowed one run and one hit with five strikeouts. Trevor Rehnstrom cleaned things up throwing the last innings with a quick three outs.

The Heartland Hawks are to host the Post Season Region Tournament May 8th through 11th to try and move on to the District Tournament the following weekend.
