Soccer Wins Region-24 Tournament

Both Teams Advance to District Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 It was championship weekend at the Corn Crib, as Heartland soccer played host to the Region-24 Tournament. The men's team beat Southwestern Illinois College 2-1 on Wednesday to advance to Saturday's championship match against rival Parkland College. Heartland ultimately prevailed 7-1 in that contest, while the women's team defeated Kaskaskia College 6-0 on Sunday to win the Region-24 Sub-Region A Championship.
 
Despite falling to the Hawks twice during the regular season, SWIC had a tough game plan for Heartland to overcome. The game featured five yellow cards and five red cards across the two squads. Oier Izko would begin the scoring for the Hawks off of a Raul Oliu assist in the 28th minute. SWIC would respond in the 36th minute to tie the game.Emilio Madrigal  then found the net in the 60th minute off of an assist by Jino Agbassa, which ultimately was the game-winner for the Hawks to advance to Saturday's championship match.
 
Parkland College was the foe for Heartland on Saturday, as the Hawks dominated the Cobras with five goals in the second half. Jaedyn Saunders found the net twice for the Hawks in the 48th and 49th minute. Santiago Etcheverry began the scoring for the Hawks with a goal in the 11th minute, with Agbassa following in the 19th minute. Mario Sapena (67th minute), Marcos Fernandez (79th minute) and Sebastian Padilla (81st minute) accounted for the other goals for the Hawks, who improved to 13-1 on the season.
 
The women's team had very similar success in Sunday's contest against Kaskaskia College. Zara Dominguez ignited the Hawks with 3 goals (14th, 60th, 84th), while Lina Lopez added 2 goals (16th, 87th) and 2 assists. Eve Nevarez accounted for the other score for the Hawks in the 67th minute. Goalkeeper Sofia Mosquera contributed a save for the Hawks, who sit at 10-1-1 overall.

At the conclusion of each championship contest, All-Region awards were handed out. On the men's side, the Hawks received four nominations. Jino Agbassa was named the Region-24 Newcomer of the Year, while Santiago Etcheverry, Elias Saiz and Gonzalo Castells all were named to the All-Region team. Lina Lopez was named the Region-24 Player of the Year for the women's team, with Sofia Mosquera, Lydia Madrid and Zara Dominguez all named to the All-Region team. Head coach Alex Trent was named the Region-24 Women's Coach of the Year for Heartland.
 
Both the men's and women's teams will advance to the District Tournament Nov. 3-6 in Park Hills, Mo. The men will begin play at 2 p.m. Thursday against St. Louis Community College, while the women begin play at 2 p.m.Friday versus Mineral Area College.
