Box Score 2 The Hawks had a busy day at the Corn Crib as baseball and women's soccer were both in action. The Hawks hosted three games and went a perfect 3-0 on the day.
Baseball kicked off the day with a double header against John Wood Community College. In game one of the MWAC matchup, the Hawks' offense came alive in the third inning when sophomore,
Sam Hojnar, hit a grand slam, putting the Hawks up 4-1. Sophomores,
Nick Fields and
Tyler Thierry, chipped in an RBI and 2 hits, respectively.
Freshman,
Kieran Schmitz, started game one for the Hawks. Schmitz went four innings and allowed only three runs as he brought home the win. Coming in relief was sophomore,
Jack Gilmore. In three innings of work, Gilmore allowed only 1 hit and 2 runs, 1 earned. Gilmore also picked up 6 strikeouts as he earned the save and the Hawks brought home a 6-5 win in game one.
In game two of the double header, the Hawk's offense exploded for 13 hits and 11 runs. The offensive surge began when sophomore,
Trent Hoogerwerf, drove in 2 runs with his second homerun of the year. Leading the offense, once again, was Thierry who had 2 RBIs and 3 hits, one of which was an inside the park homerun. Sophomore,
Bryce Hayman, also had a solid game at the plate racking up 3 hits and 3 RBIs.
Starter,
Connor Aten, had another solid outing for Hawks as he went five innings, allowing only 1 run and racking up 8 strikeouts. Coming in relief for Aten was sophomore,
Blake Harseim. Harseim picked up 2 strikeouts for himself as he threw a scoreless 6
th for the Hawks. The Hawks only needed six innings to close it out as they took home a dominating 11-1 win in game two and an overall series win against JWCC.
To round out the day at the Corn Crib, the Hawks women's soccer team hosted their season opener against Waubonsee Community College. The Chiefs, who were also playing in their season opener, posted a 10-7-1 record in their 2019 season.
Scoring their first goal of the season and giving the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 16
th minute was sophomore,
Joana Aguilar. The Hawks exploded in the second half with 2 consecutive goals by freshman,
Lucia Cuadra, putting the Hawks up 3-0. Sophomore,
Montserrat Alsina, added on another goal in the 64
th minute on an assist from Cuadra. In the 80
th minute, sophomore,
Irene Robles, put the Hawks up 5-0 with a header into the net on an assist from
Apryl Alvarez.
The Hawks eventually took home a controlling 5-1 win in their season and home opener. Â
