Women's Soccer Opens Up Season with a W

Hawks Record First Shutout of the Year

Box Score Normal, Illinois - The women opened up the 2019 campaign with a solid win against the Warriors of Wabash Valley College. The Hawks held possession of the ball for the majority of the game, and it really started right from the first kick-off. Two goals in the middle of the first half were ultimately enough for the Hawks to hold on to a victory, but that did not stop their aggressiveness on the attack in the second half. The Hawks managed a 20:2 shot advantage over the Warriors, and 15 of those 20 shots were on goal, while none of the Warriors shots were truly tested by goalkeeper Ana Clara Bigarella the entire game.

The first half was a dominating performance by the Hawks as the defense made it nearly impossible for the Warriors to get a shot off, and the offense really had some good looks at the goal. Montanna Stewart recorded her first goal on the season when she knocked one in from close range at the 26' minute. Shortly thereafter, Alicia Martinez put in her first goal on the season with a strong kick right at the end of the 32' mark.

The defense for the Hawks was very impressive throughout the game as the Warriors were only able to record one shot in the second half, and it still went high over the keepers head. The offense did not slow up at all as 13 of the 20 total shots taken happened in the second half. One player who stood out with her shooting ability was Alicia Martinez. She finished the game with 10 shots, 6 being on goal (SOG) and 1 that made it into the back of the net. Other players came in and showed their offensive skill sets as well. Kayla James, Joana Aguilar, Irene Robles and Daisy Covarrubias all took shots that were on target last night.

The Hawks ride this win into their next match when they take on Scott Community College on Tuesday, August 27th at 4:00 PM at The Corn Crib.
