Heartland Softball Splits on the Road

On April 7th, the Heartland Hawks took a trip to Kankakee Community College, where they faced the Cavaliers in a Tuesday evening doubleheader. The offense collected 15 hits across both games and outscored their opponent 13-11.

Game one was all Heartland as the offense came alive with two big innings. Shelby Oakley kept crushing the ball for the Hawks and put the team on the board at the top of the third inning. With a couple of singles and a walk, the first baseman found herself at the plate with the bases loaded. Sure enough, the freshman hits a shot to left field for a grand slam to put the Hawks ahead 4-0. The following inning, Oakley came up once again to add another RBI to her total with a line drive single to score Abigail Witt. Another Hawk taking their flight around the bases was sophomore Ellie Ward, who hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth for her second hit of the night. Also adding two hits to the team's total were Kendall Lowery, Bella Johnson, and Olivia Kobel.
Pitching the entire five innings was sophomore Tayla Eaves, who faced a total of 23 batters, throwing 83 pitches. The right-handed hurler only allowed six hits and three runs, walking two and striking out three batters. The defense was solid and left game one without committing an error.

The Hawks returned for game two after securing the run-rule in five innings with a 13-3 victory.

The Cavaliers returned the favor when Heartland dropped game two 0-8. The offense collected two hits through 16 at-bats from Lowery and Sienna Arragones. Araceli Condie-Espinosa found the bases when she was hit in the fourth inning. Keearrah Brown threw the five innings for the Hawks, where she faced 31 batters. The freshman only allowed a single free base and ended the evening with two strikeouts.

The April 8th doubleheader against Kishwaukee College was canceled. The next gameday for the Hawks will now be on Friday, April 11th, where Heartland will travel to Quincy, Illinois, to face John Wood Community College.
