On Wednesday, October 29th, the Heartland Hawks took on Kankakee Community College in a special night. Heartland recognized the teams' sophomores and collaborated with Purpose After Sports to initiate a necessary conversation about a crucial matter.
The Hawks closed out the night with a dominant 3–0 sweep over Kankakee (25–12, 25–20, 25–13), powered by a strong offensive attack and a lockdown defensive effort.
Halle Moomaw led the Hawks with 11 kills and 4 blocks, while
Graci Junis added 8 kills and a team-high 17 digs.
Brooklyn Brennan controlled the offense with an impressive 37 assists and 3 aces, and
Annabelle Fortin chipped in 3 aces of her own. Heartland finished with 46 kills, 7 aces, and 58 digs while holding Kankakee to just 17 kills in the match.
Head Coach Mary Frahm reflects on the special night celebrating who her athletes are on and off the court:
"PAS' mission is built on athletes defining their identity in more than just their performance on the court, and that is something we live and breathe by at Heartland, so bringing the two together made perfect sense," Frahm comments. Honoring this historic sophomore class on the court, while also celebrating the traits that make them uniquely beautiful, was a perfect way to end regular-season play for us. It felt right, it felt authentic, and it felt like a great reflection of the legacy that those 10 women will leave on our program."
The night was truly special as the Hawks also rounded out their regular season with a 34-4, making this season the best regular season finish in program history. The Hawks went undefeated in conference and are only just starting as they host the Region 24 Tournament on Saturday, November 8th, at the Fitness and Recreation Center.
