The Heartland baseball team returned home for a mid-week nonconference clash with Bryant & Stratton College on Thursday at The Corn Crib. Despite falling 3-2 early in the contest, six runs in the fourth inning proved to be the difference for the Hawks in a 13-7 triumph to improve to 6-5 on the year.
Â
Bryant & Stratton jumped out in front in the top of the first, as an RBI groundout by Carlos Walta gave the visitors a 1-0 advantage. A single by
TJ Williams in the bottom of the frame followed by a
Corey Boyette base knock scored Williams to make it 1-1.
Tommy Atkinson added a single up the middle to score Boyette to make it 2-1 in favor of the Hawks.
Â
The Bobcats would respond with two tallies in the second on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Weigman and an RBI single by Alex Esser to give BSC a 3-2 lead.
Â
The Hawks started to gain some momentum offensively in the fourth, as Atkinson and Beau Polickey both singled before
Nate Cooley walked to load the bases. Williams gave the Hawks the lead with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
Brady Davidson added another two-RBI hit after Williams to make it 6-3. Davidson would later score on a wild pitch, and pinch hitter
Kyle Jannenga drove in another tally with a groundout to give the Hawks an 8-3 advantage.
Â
A Williams RBI bunt and a groundout by Davidson extended the lead to 11-3 in the fifth. After the Bobcats scored on a Jedvier Garcia single in the sixth, Boyette singled home
Max Hennemann to give the Hawks some added cushion at 12-4.
Â
BSC would threaten in the eighth with three more runs, but reliever
Grant Aten was able to limit the damage. A Cooley RBI double in the eighth accounted for the lone other run for the Hawks.
Â
Williams paced the Hawks offensively with four hits, three runs and three RBI's. Boyette and Atkinson each contributed two hits apiece.
Jimmy Amptmann received the victory in relief for Heartland, tossing three innings and yielding just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.
Â
The Hawks will return to action at Noon Sunday, as they will begin conference play at John Wood.
