Game Recap: Volleyball | | Blaine Lewallen

Volleyball Moves to 8-0 With Sweep at Southeastern Iowa Tournament

After sweeping its opening tournament in Rockford, Heartland volleyball continued its hot streak to begin regular season play by winning four more times at the Southeastern Iowa Tournament in West Burlington, Iowa on Friday and Saturday. The Hawks defeated John Wood Community College and Mineral Area College on Friday before returning to sweep Black Hawk College and Highland Community College on Saturday. Heartland currently sits at 8-0 on the young season, and is currently ranked No. 7 in the latest NJCAA DII rankings.

Game 1 vs. John Wood
The Hawks began the tournament by sweeping conference foe John Wood on Friday morning. A 25-16 set one victory followed by a 25-17 win in set two put the Hawks in solid shape for a sweep, but the Blazers still had some fight left in them. John Wood ignited a comeback to take a late lead in the third set, but the Hawks maintained their composure to ultimately secure the sweep with a 28-26 set three win. Olivia Pippin finished the contest with eight kills, eight digs and 23 assists. Holly McDonald led the kill category with nine, while Kennedy Conrad supplied 20 digs for the Hawks.

Game 2 vs. Mineral Area College
In Friday's second match, the Hawks narrowly defeated Mineral Area in a tough battle. Heartland won the first set 25-23 before the Cardinals took set two 25-20. The Hawks returned to the driver's seat with a 25-19 win in set three, but Mineral Area would not go down quietly. The Cardinals tied the match with a 25-23 win in set four, and gave Heartland all it could handle in the deciding fifth set before the Hawks pulled away for a 15-13 set victory. Conrad contributed 30 digs for the Hawks, with Pippin adding 12 kills, 24 assists and seven digs. Julianne Kieion finished with 28 assists and 19 digs. Gracie Sanderson and Emma Harper each had 10 kills.

Game 3 vs. Black Hawk College
Heartland would return Saturday morning to face-off with Black Hawk College. The Hawks secured another sweep, winning set one 25-9 before taking sets two and three 25-14 and 25-21. Harper contributed 12 kills, while Kielion had 13 assists and 13 digs. Conrad once again paced the Hawks in digs with 20.

Game 4 vs. Highland
The final match of the weekend for Heartland was much of the same, as the Hawks took little time to sweep Highland (25-11, 25-13, 25-16) to cap-off an undefeated weekend. Conrad and Pippin each concluded with 14 digs, with Pippin also adding 10 kills. Harper supplied 13 kills and 10 digs, while Kielion had 25 assists.

The Hawks return to action at 6 pm Wednesday at Spoon River College.
