Box Score In a tournament setting, unpredictability is what makes contests exciting and engaging. 'Survive and advance' is often a phrase used in tournament play, as each team is fighting for the same ultimate goal. The No. 10-seeded Heartland men's soccer team did just that in Monday's pool play contest, as
Mohammad Sanyang's golden goal with 13 seconds remaining in double-overtime ignited the Hawks to a 4-3 victory over the sixth-seeded Schoolcraft College Ocelots at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz.
Sanyang's score came after goalkeeper
Oliver Butler launched a kick from midfield with 30 seconds remaining. The ball ricocheted off of a Schoolcraft defender into the lap of
Marcos Mateos, who booted a left-footed volley into some traffic near the goal. The ball was blocked by an Ocelot defender, and Sanyang gathered and blasted it through the top right post to give the Hawks the walk-off victory.
Schoolcraft's Dante Davidson started the scoring with a goal in the 16
th minute before
Anderson Micolta tied the contest at 1-1 in the 29
th minute with a header on a
Rodrigo Gomez assist.
After Matheus Barbosa scored an open goal to give the Ocelots a 2-1 advantage in the 64
th minute,
Joe Delaney again tied it with a goal in the 69
th minute. Moments later, Mateos found the net in the 77
th minute on a penalty kick to boost the Hawks in front 3-2.
The Ocelots still had some fight left in them, however, as Gavin Brose scored on a free kick to tie the contest at 3-3. Both team's held strong in the first overtime before Sanyang's golden goal secured the victory for the Hawks.
Heartland outshot Schoolcraft 18-14, which included nine shots on goal compared to seven by the Ocelots. Goalkeeper
Oliver Butler finished with three saves on the afternoon.
The Hawks will now await the result of the Schoolcraft and CCBC-Essex game, which will take place Tuesday at 4:00 PM CST. The winner of the contest will determine who advances to Thursday's semifinals, with the Hawks still very much alive to advance.
