Men’s Soccer Splits Games Against Western Iowa Tech, South Suburban

The Hawks Men's Soccer Squad lost to Western Iowa Tech 2-3 while taking down South Suburban 3-0 to round out their Labor Day weekend games.

Game 1: Western Iowa Tech def. Heartland, 3-2

An intense game that saw 11 total cards against Western Iowa Tech ultimately led to a Heartland defeat last Friday. Center back Jose Martinez and forward Logan Lelm scored the lone goals for Heartland. After going down by one, Lelm tied the game in the 30th minute off an assist from right winger Carl-Hans Joseph. Heartland was assessed a red card in the 68th minute off of a handball in the box, which put them down a man for the rest of the game and making it extremely hard to generate offense. Western Iowa Tech took advantage right away, scoring in the 69th minute and the 77th minute. Even down a man, Heartland fought hard and brought it back to a one goal deficit after Martinez scored his goal in the 88th minute. Goalkeeper Nathan Serra was solid in net while being down a player. He made five saves on eight SOG. The Hawks were efficient too, with seven of their eight total shots being SOG.

Game 2: Heartland def. South Suburban, 3-0

The Hawks put together a much-needed win against South Suburban, mainly through a suffocating offense. They tallied 19 total shots, with 11 of them being on goal. Midfielder Keegan Anderson kicked off the scoring with a goal in the 22nd minute off of an assist from Lelm. CAM Niek Theunissen scored right after this in the 31st minute off of an assist from center mid Osiel Bedolla. The nail in the coffin came from center mid Parker Hinds who scored in the 72nd minute off of an assist from Theunissen.

The Men's squad will have their first MWAC game against John Wood CC this Saturday in Quincy, IL, at 2:00 p.m.
