Hawks Split Season Opening Series

Coach Razo Earns First Win as HCC Head Coach

Normal, Illinois - The Heartland Hawks split their season opening doubleheader with the Madison College Wolfpack on Sunday. The Hawks dropped game one with a score of 4-1, but they quickly bounced back with a 4-3 win in the second game.

GAME 1
Jack Gilmore was Heartland's opening day starter on the mound. Gilmore pitched 4.2 innings giving up zero hits, four runs, three walks and also struck out five batters along the way.

Not much offense happened for either team through the first four innings. Gilmore held the Wolfpack batters hitless during his first outing of the season, and Ryan Maher and Trent Hoogerwerf recorded the only three hits for the Hawks up until the fifth inning.

Madison College scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning, as they took advantage off a handful of walks and wild pitches. In the bottom half of the inning, the Hawks were able to generate runners on second and third with only one out but were unable to capitalize.

Luke Price led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single to left-center. He stole second base when the Hawks were down to their final out, and he ultimately scored off of a throwing error to first base made by Madison's shortstop.

GAME 2
Freshman Dylan Foley had his first collegiate start in game two, and his stat line finished with three innings pitched giving up two hits, two runs (earned), four walks and five strikeouts. Reese Dutton earned the win for Heartland. He came in for relief to begin the fourth inning, and he only gave up one run (earned), one hit, one walk and struck out six for the night.

In the third inning, Madison College left two runners on base in the top half, and Heartland left one runner on base in the bottom half. The Wolfpack led off the fourth inning with a solo homer to left field off Foley. Dutton came in after two more runners got on base following the home run, and he was able to get the next two batters to ground out and the final batter to strike out swinging.

Zeb Roos got the energy going in the stadium when he tripled to left-center in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jaylen Heard came up right after Roos and singled off a blooper into shallow right field. Roos scored on the play.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, the Wolfpack scored another run off a single into left field to put them up 3-1.

The Hawks rallied hard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Back-to-back home runs started the comeback when both Jake Marti and Zeb Roos hit shots over the left field wall. After an ensuing strikeout, Will Oberg walked and eventually stole second base a little bit after. Luke Price grounded out to the second baseman, which moved Oberg over to third base. Austin Cain walked, Bryce Hayman was hit by a pitch, so all three bases were loaded with one out. Sean Blanchard, with the steady eye, took a walk and drove in Oberg from there. Hawks up 4-3 after six.

Dutton struck out two and got another to ground out to complete the comeback victory for the Heartland Hawks in the seventh inning.

(#20) Heartland (1-1) returns to action Saturday, March 7th at 10:00 AM ET against Macomb Community College in Lakeland, FL.
