Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ryan Beckner

Men's Soccer Wins Big in MWAC Opener

Baylon Records the Hat Trick

Normal, Illinois - It could not have been a better night to be a Hawks player or a Hawks fan. Five different Hawks scored a goal in a game that was easily over by halftime. Besides a penalty kick scored by Adam Naim from Lincoln Land in the 9' minute, the Loggers only logged one shot on goal the rest of the game. From the beginning, it was a physical, chippy matchup with many fouls and four total yellow cards given out on the day. However, the Heartland men did not let any of it throw them off their game as they finished with an 8-1 victory.

The hailstorm began at the 6' mark. Bryan Alfaro scored his first goal of the season when he shot the ball from about ten yards outside the box, and the ball flew over the goalie's head into the back right corner. Three minutes later, Daniel Trojman took the ball with the defender on his back and ran towards the right side of the goal. The goalie came out and Trojman flicked the ball over the goalie's head for a 2-0 lead. Nearly one minute later, Lincoln Land was fouled just inside the box, and Adam Naim put in an easy goal to trim the lead in half. At the 22' minute, Hanif Mohammad crossed a pass that was headed out by a player from Lincoln. Heriberto Garza was in perfect position to receive the clearance, secured the ball, let it bounce once, and volleyed it over the goalie's head into the back of the net. Trojman's second goal of the day happened one minute later when a ball cleared the defenders in the box, and one Hawks player let the pass go by him intentionally to be recovered by Trojman. Daniel knocked the shot into the near post, top left corner with a powerful kick that made the score 4-1.

The most athletic play of the game happened from Iram Baylon at the 28' minute. He received a cross from Mohammad and was there to head the ball into the goal, however, goalie Cole Sherrock got one hand up to deflect the shot out. The ball went back over Baylon's head, so he turned around, ran towards the ball and executed a beautiful over-the-shoulder bicycle kick for his first goal of the game and season.

The second half was all Hawks, and Baylon was at the center of it as he recorded two more goals for the heavily desired hat-trick. In between his second and third goal, Mohammad dropped in his first goal of the season when he booted a ball from deep center outside of the box and bent it around the nearby defenders. It was a great way to finish off his game as he made some pristine passes yesterday. Overall, Heartland had thirty-two shots on the day, while Lincoln Land only had one. With a shot ratio like that, you are bound to come away with a win like the Hawks did.

Next match for the men is set for Saturday, September 7th at 1:00 PM. They are going on the road and will take on Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa, Iowa.
