NORMAL, Ill. - The Hawks improved their record to 20-7 after taking both games in Saturday's conference doubleheader against Spoon River College to bring their win streak to five games. After sweeping the Snappers in a fall doubleheader, the weekend's two wins bring the Hawks' record against Spoon River College to 4-0.
Game 1 (W, 5-4)
Spoon River took the lead early in the first inning on a two-run homerun by Alexis Campbell, but in the bottom of that same inning sophomore
Jasmine McCormick hit one of her own. McCormick's solo homerun in the bottom of the first is her fifth of the year, the second most on the team behind
Maddie Mackey, who has six on the year. The Snappers would go on to add another two runs to their lead in the fourth inning on a solo homerun by Ashlyn Towery and an unearned run scored by Jurnee Adams. In the fifth inning, University of Wisconsin - Parkside commit
Tijanne Ross drove in two on a single to center field to bring the Hawks within one.
Maddie Mackey tied the game up in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single to left field, scoring
Jasmine McCormick from second base. Tied going into the final half inning of the game, sophomore
Abbey Walsh reached base on a single to center field, advancing to second base on a ground out by Ayssa Roll a batter later. With one out and a runner in scoring position, freshman
Grace LaFollett came to the plate and hit an RBI single to second base, scoring Walsh from second base to win the game in walk-off fashion.
Game 2 (W, 7-5)
The Hawks recorded four extra-base hits in the second game of the afternoon, tallying 10 hits and only one strikeout.
Laura Phillips got the Hawks on the board first in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homerun to center field. Spoon River would make a quick comeback an inning later on a RBI single by Alexis Campbell, and another RBI single by Rayna Davis to give the Snappers a one run lead. In the bottom of the same inning, the Hawks took the lead back on an RBI triple to left field from
Jasmine McCormick. McCormick would go on to score from third base a batter later when
Danielle Ladendorf would reach base on an error by shortstop Tina Foglesong. Trailing going into the top of the fifth inning, Spoon River took the lead once again on a double down the right field line hit by Kate Harkey, scoring Rayna Davis and Alexis Campbell. The Hawks broke away in the bottom of the same inning, with
Abbey Walsh getting the scoring started on an RBI single to center field, bringing
Jasmine McCormick across the plate for the second time of the game. A batter later,
Laura Phillips recorded her second extra-base hit of the game on an RBI doubole to right center field, advancing
Abbey Walsh to third base and scoring
Maddie Mackey from second. Phillips' double would bring up freshman
Alysa Martin, whose single to center field would score Walsh from third and Phillips from second, giving the Hawks a three-run lead. Spoon River made a final push in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly that would score one, but it wouldn't be enough to beat the Hawks.
