Softball Shares Wins with Illinois Central College

ICC Pitching Shuts Down Hawks in Game 1

NORMAL, Ill. - Heartland was unable to edge Illinois Central College in Game 1 of Wednesday afternoon's Region 24 double header at the Corn Crib. The Hawks would go on to win Game 2 to split the series with the Cougars.

Game 1 (L, 3-7)

Heartland's Marissa Adams (UW - Whitewater commit) took the mound in the first game of the afternoon for the Hawks, striking out two and walking only one. ICC slowly chipped away at the Hawks, scoring twice in the second inning and again in the fourth to take a three run lead. Bats started heating up for the Hawks in the bottom of the fifth, where Jasmine McCormick started the rally on a single to center field and driving in Madison Scott and Laura Phillips. A few batters later, sophomore Maddie Mackey (Northern Illinois University commit) continued the rally on a ground-out to the short stop, scoring Grace LaFollett to tie the game at three. A two-run homerun from ICC's Aubrielle Hunt in the top of the sixth inning would spoil that lead, and the Cougars would go on to score two more in the top of the seventh, bringing the final score to 7-3.

Game 2 (W, 4-3)

The Hawks got on the board early in Game 2 of the evening, where the Hawks scored three quick runs on ICC's Abbi Taylor. Maddie Mackey led the charge on an RBI double to center field, driving in Jasmine McCormick. Danielle Ladendorf reached base on an error by Cecilia Parker, which scored Maddie Mackey to bring the Hawks' lead to 2-0. Another error by ICC saw Kennedy Savage reach base, advancing Grace LaFollett to second base and scoring Abbey Walsh. ICC would go on to score two in the bottom of the second inning to come within one. Freshman Alysa Martin brough the Hawks lead to 4-2 on an infield single, driving in Jasmine McCormick. A homerun in the top of the fifth inning by ICC's Lexy Trammell brought the Cougars within one, but it wasn't enough to take Game 2.

The Hawks return home on Saturday, March 30th at 1:00 PM for an MWAC matchup against Lincoln Land Community College at the Corn Crib. You can live stream all Heartland Hawks home contests online by clicking here!
