Hawks Shutout Carl Sandburg in Last Regular Season Home Game

Two Freshmen Score First Goals of 2019 Campaign

Normal, Illinois - The Hawks put up a strong performance in their final regular season match at The Corn Crib this past Wednesday. The game resembled the first month of the season for the men's team when they beat their competition on an average of 5 goals to less than 1 goal for the opposition. It has been a struggle for the guys since mid-September, but it must have felt great to get that final home victory before the Region 24 Tournament begins.

It was a well-balanced effort from Heartland as Carl Sandburg College only got off 5 shots between both halves, while just 1 of those shots was actually on-goal. The Hawks, however, managed 17 total shots and 12 of those were on-goal. Below is a breakdown of each of the 5 goals scored by 4 different Hawks from that day:

Scoring Plays
- Iram Baylon scores from outside the top of the box after a Carl Sandburg defender loses possession of the ball. He nails the back of the net in the upper-right corner for goal number 10 on the year (26').
- Kwanele Khathi, Fr. from Johannesburg, South Africa, records his 1st goal as a Hawk after beating a defender into the left side of the box and knocking a ball into the near-post, lower-corner (50').

- Bryan Alfaro delivers a beautiful pass off a corner kick that flies over 4 defenders right into Iram Baylon's position. Iram heads the ball into the goal for his team-leading 11th score of the season (64').
- Alfaro does it again! Another corner kick from the same spot, but this time it is the Nimes, France native, Loris Granier, who heads it into goal. Granier is a freshman for Heartland, and he now holds a goal in the 2019 season (68').
- Saul Amaya tries to do one better than Alfaro when he makes an overhead pass from outside the right of the box and crosses it into the middle. Heriberto Garza is in perfect position and makes a strong header for his 3rd goal of the year (90').

The Heartland Hawks finish the regular season with a record of 5-5-1. Next up is the Region 24 Tournament. Stay tuned for more information regarding tournament seeding, matchups, host locations and kick-off times.
