Hawks Defeat John Wood in First Round

Next Up is #1 Seed Lewis & Clark

Normal, IllinoisMen's soccer came away with a big win in the first round of the Region 24 Tournament yesterday. 5th seed John Wood Community College came into Normal for the second time this season. The first match between the two teams happened at The Corn Crib on September 18th in the regular season when the game ended in a 0-0 tie. Heartland had the upper hand yesterday as they came away with a 3-1 victory to advance to the semi-final round.

The Hawks put up 15 shots on the day while John Wood recorded 8. It was also quite a physical game as 29 fouls were accounted for between both teams. The playoff atmosphere and intensity was certainly in effect for the players, coaches and fans in attendance. Below you can read how each goal happened for the Hawks and the Blazers:

Scoring Plays
- Less than two minutes into the second half, Hanif Mohammad made one of the most impressive goals of the season at The Corn Crib. With not many opportunities to score in the first half, Mohammad took the shot from roughly 30 yards out from the goalie and banged it in over the goalie's head for a Heartland 1-0 lead.
- Daniel Trojman scored off an assist from Saul Amaya when Amaya passed the ball across the top of the goalie's box to the other side where Trojman was positioned. Trojman took it inside the box, where only the goalie was left to defend, and kicked it in near-post for a 2-0 lead ('55).
- John Wood scored when a Heartland defender attempted a pass backwards to goalie Elias Zamora. When the ball got to Zamora, however, Aaron Lennart Schone from John Wood was right there in front and deflected Zamora's pass backwards into Heartland's net ('79).
- In the 90th minute, Trojman received a pass inside John Wood's box. He attempted a shot that was deflected by goalie Jake Happel, bounced off the near goal post, and Iram Baylon was in the right position to pull off a strong header with the goalie still on the ground after the shot by Trojman.

With this win for the #4 seed Hawks, they travel to Godfrey, IL this Saturday, October 26th to take on #1 seed Lewis & Clark in the semi-final round. Kick-off is at noon. #2 Illinois Central College will play #3 Parkland College in the other semi-final game afterwards at 2:00 PM.

Winners of both matchups will play each other for the Region 24 Tournament Championship the next day, Sunday October 27th at noon at host location, Lewis & Clark CC.

Go Hawks!
