Heartland Hawks Men's Soccer Continue Red Hot Season
Bowen Wyminga, Trevor Kacou Lead Hawks to 5-0 Win Over Southwestern Illinois College
NORMAL, Illinois - Jonathan Titzel's Hawks found the back of the net five times in their victory over Southwest Illinois College, improving their record to 7-2-0 on the season.
Heartland Community College has never seen the Men's Soccer program start a season this well since its inception in 2007, and the Hawks showed no signs of slowing down in last night's match against Southwestern Illinois College. Last week after a rained out game at John Wood Community College, head coach
Jonathan Titzel prepped his squad for the week ahead, where they would play three games in less than a week.
"We knew going into the week that we needed to get our fitness up. Both John Wood and Lewis & Clark Community College are fast, competitive teams, and we needed to be ready to face that head on. I wanted to let our guys know that we would be running a lot in practice, not as a punishment, but to get our bodies ready for this week."
The focus on fitness paid off, as the Hawks scored three goals within 20 minutes of each other in the first half. The first goal came in the 26th minute, scored by
Owen Punselie and assisted by
Trevor Kacou, who had a shot on net that came back to Punselie. 12 minutes later it was
Matheus Giron who found the back of the net, assisted by midfielder
Bowen Wyminga after
Trevor Kacou was taken down in the box. The final goal of the half came in the 43rd minute on a perfectly placed set piece from a corner kick taken by Wyminga that found center back
Carson Oltman, who rose up and headed it past SWIC's Trevor Davis.
Going into the second half with a 3-0 lead, the Hawks played more of a defensive game, slowing down the push to the net. That didn't stop Wyminga from adding a goal to his already impressive performance, with two assists coming in the first half. That goal came in the 55th minute, assisted by
Trevor Kacou, who also recorded his second assist in the match. The final goal came from Sao Paolo, Brazil native
Matheus Porzelt in the 77th minute to give the Hawks their seventh win of the season with a final score of 5-0 over SWIC.
The Hawks look to extend their win streak to three when they face off against St. Charles Community College on Saturday, September 29th. The match will kick off at 12:30 PM (CST) at the Corn Crib. Admission to all games is free.
