Darrin York was named the second head golf coach in Heartland Community College history on December 16, 2022, after serving as an assistant coach for the Hawks. Entering his fifth season in 2026-27, York has quickly established Heartland as one of the premier NJCAA Division II programs in the nation. Under his leadership, the Hawks have made three NJCAA National Championship appearances, captured back-to-back Region 24 Championships (2025, 2026), produced six All-Americans, and recorded the highest national finish in program history with a national runner-up finish in 2026.
The 2025-26 season marked the most successful campaign in program history. The Hawks captured three tournament victories during the fall and carried that momentum into the spring, spending the entire season ranked among the nation's top five teams and reaching No. 1 in the national rankings. Heartland recorded top-five finishes in all eight spring events, highlighted by an individual victory from Gabriele Bravin and a team title at the Deer Hawk Classic.
The Hawks elevated their play during postseason competition, winning the Region 24 Championship by 20 strokes. All four scoring golfers earned All-Region honors, while York was named Region 24 Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. At the NJCAA Division II National Championship in Plymouth, Indiana, Heartland finished as national runner-up, the highest finish in school history. Bravin and Jack Wenzel each earned All-American honors for the second consecutive season.
During the 2024-25 season, Heartland experienced unprecedented success. Led by a talented freshman class, the Hawks posted top-five team finishes in every fall event except one. Bravin earned his first collegiate victory at the Cougar Fall Classic.
The success continued into the spring season as Heartland remained ranked among the nation's top 10 teams throughout the year, reaching a high of No. 7. The Hawks recorded top-five finishes in five of six spring events, while Bravin added an individual title at the I-74 Challenge. Heartland also secured its first Region 24 Championship in program history. Freshman Tommy Gneiser was named Region 24 Golfer of the Year, while York earned his first Region 24 Coach of the Year award. Bravin received All-Region honors, and all four Heartland scorers finished within the top 10 of the regional standings.
At the 2025 NJCAA Division II National Championship, the Hawks placed sixth, setting a new program-best finish at the time. Bravin and Wenzel each earned their first All-American selections.
The 2023-24 season marked York's first full year as head coach. The Hawks enjoyed a strong fall campaign, recording top-five finishes in all but one tournament. During the spring season, Heartland spent much of the year ranked among the nation's top 25 teams. The team's best finish came at the Cougar Classic, where the Hawks placed second among seven teams. At the Region 24 Championship, Heartland narrowly missed a top-two finish, while freshman Sam Rink earned a top-10 individual finish.
York's first season as head coach began in the spring of 2023. On March 29, 2023, he earned his first victory as head coach when the Hawks won the ICC Cougar Preview at Metamora Fields by 12 strokes. Mason Minkel paced the Hawks, claiming medalist honors by seven strokes.
Later that season, Heartland finished second at the Region 24 Championship to qualify for York's first NJCAA Division II National Championship appearance as head coach. The Hawks went on to finish tied for ninth nationally, marking only the second top-10 national finish in program history. York also coached his first two All-Americans, Chase Laack and Mason Minkel.
