After a long and successful regular season, the Heartland eSports team capped-off its spring season with a successful postseason. The Hawks' team featured two individual National Champions, with
Jonathan Edmonson placing first in the NBA 2K competition, while
Luke Sherman won the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU) Invitational.
Â
Sherman was able to pull off a win over undefeated JayJay from Blinn College to capture the SSBU championship victory.
Â
"After being forced to a lower bracket by JayJay, Luke returned the favor winning game five of the finals to force a grand finals reset (double elimination)," Heartland head coach
Jarrod Rackauskas said. "JayJay came out strong backing
Luke Sherman into a 0-2 corner. Having no room for error, Luke took control of the stage with a mixture of zoning and aggressive down smashes. In a remarkable turn of events - Luke closed-out the final series with a game 10 reverse sweep to become this year's champion."
Â
Edmonson also capped-off a 10-0 NBA 2K regular season with the championship win
Â
"The first postseason matchup of juggernauts occurred in the semifinals battle between Jonathan and NJCAAE Champion Hypercrazettv," Rackauskas said. "Jonathan fell to 1-2 in the series. With the season on the line he went to his "pocket pick", the Golden State Warriors for game four. It paid-off as Jonathan delivered a devastating 68-46 victory. Game five was a battle with Jonathan having the Heat up 22 to the Cavaliers 19 at half. Hypercrazetvv jumped ahead in the third quarter. Jonathan fortunes changed as he sniped a three-pointer from downtown to close out the quarter 33-32. The final quarter, in the final game of the semifinals, was back and forth until a costly turnover by the Hypercrazetvv opened the door to a 52-47 victory."Â
Â
Additionally, Edmonson received a second-place finish in the Madden NFL tournament after completing a 7-1 regular season.
Â
Caleb Larson placed seventh in the SSBU Open, with teammate Chris Novy placing just behind him in 17
th place. Alex Baccheschi also took-home a championship win in the SSBU Intramural Tournament for the Hawks.
Â
The Hawks also saw some success as a team, as they brought home third-place finishes in both Rocket League and League of Legends. Heartland was one of 16 community colleges selected to participate in the Rocket League competition.
