Softball Falls to Spoon River, St. Louis

Heartland softball returned to action on Tuesday and Wednesday this week, as the Hawks welcomed Spoon River College for a conference doubleheader at The Corn Crib on Tuesday before traveling to St. Louis Community College for two games on Wednesday. The Hawks would ultimately drop all four games on the week to fall to 5-9 overall and 0-4 in MWAC play on the season.

Game 1
In game one, the Hawks struggled to gain any traction offensively in an 8-1 defeat against Spoon River on Tuesday. The Snappers scored two runs in the second inning, later adding five tallies in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Heartland's lone hit and run came in the bottom-half of the fourth frame, as Mya Robinson hit a homer to right field to make it 7-1. Spoon River would add one more run in the seventh, as the Snappers used a 16-hit performance to come away with an 8-1 victory.

Game 2
Heartland jumped-out in front early in the second game of the day, as Robinson again delivered a solo shot to make it 1-0 in favor of the Hawks. After the Snappers scored a run apiece in the second and third innings, Heartland regained the lead with three runs in the fourth frame with two outs to take a 4-2 lead. Lilly Mucha started things off with a double, and later scored on a single by Amber Teimeyer. Morgan Malone contributed a single moments later before Ellie Downing drove in both Teimeyer and Malone with a base hit of her own. Spoon River responded in the following half inning with four runs to retake a 6-4 lead. The Snappers would add another tally in the sixth and three more in the seventh in the 10-4 win for the visitors.

Game 3
St. Louis Community College was the site for game three of the week for the Hawks on Wednesday. A 15-run third inning by the home team doomed the Hawks in a 17-6 defeat. After the Archers opened the game with a run in the first inning, an RBI single by Micha to score Grace Wyman tied the contest at 1-1. The Hawks would take the lead in the third on an RBI single by Teimeyer, but the Archers responded with 15 runs on 13 hits in the bottom-half of the frame to open up a 16-2 advantage. Home runs by Robinson and Teimeyer in the fifth accounted for the lone other runs for the Hawks in the loss.

Game 4
Game two on Wednesday did not prove to be favorable for the Hawks either, as the Archers took the lead early and captured an 11-2 win over Heartland. St. Louis scored four runs in the first frame, added four more in the second and scored two more in the third to make it 10-0 in favor of the home team. Heartland got on the board in the top of the fourth on an Autumn Lage solo shot to make it 10-1. Raeghan Morefield was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth to score the Hawks' final run of the contest.

The Hawks will return to action at 1 pm Sunday, as they travel to Lewis & Clark Community College for a conference doubleheader.
