Hawks Put Up Big Numbers in Win

Two Players Finish with Hat Tricks

Normal, Illinois - The Hawks scored their most goals in a game this season in a game that was arguably over by halftime. They scored nine in the first half, two in the second half and the game was called by the refs at the 70th minute as well. It began raining in the middle of the first half, but that did not stop the Hawks from continuously playing aggressive through the slick conditions. This was an important blowout win for a team that suffered a big loss just five days ago.

Both Kayla James and Montanna Stewart headlined yesterday's match as both women recorded hat tricks. James scored four goals on the day, and they all came from the 9' minute up until the 20th. Stewart scored two goals late in the first half, and then she scored her third at the 57' mark. She also recorded an assist in the middle of the first half. Alicia Martinez also had a strong day as she capitalized her only two shots with goals. These three lead the team in goals on the year after an impressive all-around showing by them and the team as a whole. James leads the team with eleven goals, Martinez with six and Stewart with five.

Daisy Covarrubias and Leilany Contreras also scored one goal each, and those were both their first goals on the year. Covarrubias scored off a nice pass from Stewart, and Contreras scored the 11th and final goal of the match at the 62' mark. The refs called the game about eight minutes later. The defense cannot be forgotten in this game, however. Heartland held Lincoln Trail to only two shots on the day, and both shots came in the second half when the game was easily in the hands of the Hawks.

A much needed win for a team that is currently sitting in first place in the MWAC with now only two games left in the regular season. The Hawks have one more home game until the MWAC playoffs, but before then, they will travel to East Peoria this Wednesday and take on Illinois Central College. This will be the final MWAC matchup of the regular season, and kick-off is set for 5:00 PM.
