Hawks Beat John Wood in Nail-Biter

Aranda Scores Late Go-Ahead Goal

Normal, Illinois - The women's soccer team came away with a 2-1 victory against MWAC opponent John Wood on Wednesday night. The Hawks improved to a 5-3 record overall and 2-0 versus the Mid-West Athletic Conference. They are currently in 1st place in the conference after last night's win. This game started later than scheduled since the men's game went into overtime beforehand, but that did not impede the focus or game plan for the Hawks once the first ball was kicked.

The first goal of the match came around the 6' minute mark when Lexia Aranda received a pass from Montanna Stewart. Aranda attempted a shot at goal, but a John Wood defender was right in front of her and blocked it. The ball deflected backwards and went straight to where Alicia Martinez was standing. The ball took two bounces and Martinez blasted the ball from 18 yards out, near post, to put Heartland up 1-0.

The rest of the first half consisted of multiple shots from both teams but no goals. Kaylee Brewer from John Wood tied the game at the 52' mark. Not many shots were taken between both teams afterwards until Lexia Aranda scored on a breakaway down the right side. Aranda received a through ball from Martinez and kicked it past the goalie for a 2-1 lead at the 77' minute. This was Aranda's first goal of the season, and definitely one of the biggest shots for the Hawks this year, as it put Heartland on top and snapped a three-game losing streak.

Next up for the women is a matchup against Southwestern Illinois College on Wednesday, September 25th at 2:00 PM.
