Softball Completes Series Sweep Against Spoon River, Falls to Lincoln Land

Hawks End Regular Season With 30-13 Record

NORMAL, Ill. - Poor playing conditions at Spoon River College in Canton, Illinois forced Saturday's doubleheader to be played at the Corn Crib, with the Hawks as the visiting team while playing on their home turf. Sunday, the Hawks traveled to Springfield, Illinois to face Lincoln Land Community College, where the Loggers would take both games. Finishing the season with a 30-13 record, going 16-8 in Mid-West Athletic Conference play, the Hawks see themselves in second place going into the Region 24 tournament. 

Saturday, May 4th at Spoon River College

Game 1 (W, 11-0)


Alyssa Roll improved her record on the mound to 7-0 on the season, throwing a complete 7.0 inning game, allowing only one hit and striking out six. With Roll doing her part, the rest of the Hawks did theirs at the place, scoring 11 runs on 15 hits, recording no strikeouts. Four Hawks recorded extra base hits, and only one batter did not record at least one hit in the game. 

Abbey Walsh started the scoring in the top of the first inning on an RBI double that would score two, giving the Hawks an early 2-0 lead. Another run would score in the third inning as Alyssa Martin single down the right field line to bring Maddie Mackey (Northern Illinois University commit) across the plate. An inning later, Molly Walter would hit a sacrifice fly to right field, advancing Grace LaFollett to third and scoring Madison Scott. A batter later, Jasmine McCormick would record an RBI single to center field that would score LaFollett from third. Molly Walter would record another RBI in the sixth inning to bring the Hawks' lead to six after six innings of play. Five more runs would score in the top of the seventh inning to bring the final score to 11-0. 

Molly Walter would record a season-high four RBIs in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Game 2 (W, 9-0)

The Hawks would win the second game of the afternoon on a run-rule in the fifth inning. LeRoy, Illinois native and University of Wisconsin - Whitewater commit Marissa Adams would get the start on the mound, throwing 5.0 innings, allowing no runs on six hits to go 8-7 on the season. 

In the top of the first inning, the Hawks would put four runs on the board on a Maddie Mackey RBI double, Alyssa Martin RBI single, and Grace LaFollett recorded her second homerun of the year with a two-run shot to right center field. In the top of the next inning, Alyssa Martin would reach base on an error committed by shortstop Mackenzie Hedges, an error that would score Jasmine McCormick. Two more runs would score in the third inning, both runs being walked in. Maddie Mackey's two-run homerun in the fifth inning would enforce the run-rule and bring the final score to 9-0. 

Mackey ends the season with a team-high nine homeruns on the year, with Jasmine McCormick one behind with eight. 

Sunday, May 5th at Lincoln Land Community College

Game 1 (L, 4-5)


After holding the lead through the sixth inning, a late-game rally saw the Loggers score four in the bottom of the sixth inning to come back and take the win from the Hawks. 

Alyssa Martin scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning on a solo homerun to center field. An inning later, Madison Scott would reach on an error committed by Lincoln Land's Kourtney Zobrist, which would score Abbey Walsh from third. In the bottom of the fourth, the Loggers would score their only run until the sixth inning rally on a solo homerun by Katie Weller. Two more runs would score in the sixth inning for the Hawks, as Molly Walter bunted in Grace LaFollett from third, and Jasmine McCormick would hit an RBI single that would score Molly Walter. Leading 4-1 going into the bottom half of the inning, the Hawks would quickly find themselves in trouble as Kourtney Zobrist would tie the game up on a bases-clearing double. With one out left in the inning, Nicole Robinson would single to left field and score Zobrist to bring the final score to 4-5. 

Game 2 (L, 2-3)

Coming off of an exciting ending to the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, the Loggers continued early into the second game, scoring their only three runs of the game in the first inning. The Hawks would chip away as the game continue on, as Molly Walter recorded her third homerun of the year to cut the deficit to two. Three innings later, Danielle Ladendorf came to the plate, hitting an RBI double to right field that would score Alyssa Martin, bringing the Hawks within one, but it wouldn't be enough to edge Lincoln Land.
