NORMAL, Ill. - The Hawks completed a series sweep against the John Wood Community College Blazers Thursday at the Corn Crib, winning both games on an eight-run rule in the fifth inning. Heartland scored at least one run in every inning but the fifth inning of the second game of the afternoon, tallying 29 total runs and extending their win streak to 11 games.
Game 1 (W, 13-4)
Alyssa Roll took the mound for the Hawks in the first game of the afternoon, pitching in all five innings. Roll struck out three of the 24 batters she faced, allowing four runs on four hits.
Alysa Martin got the Hawks going in the first inning with a solo home run over the left field wall. John Wood took the lead on the Hawks in the top of the second, scoring four runs on three hits. The Hawks would add four runs of their own in the bottom of the second on an RBI single from
Danielle Witzig, and
Jasmine McCormick hit a three-run homerun to bring her total on the year to seven. The third inning saw the Hawks add a run on a
Hannah Talley RBI single, and another run was walked in to put the Hawks up by three runs.
The Hawks continued chipping away at the Blazers in the fourth inning, putting another run on the board on an
Abbey Walsh single to left field that scored
Maddie Mackey.
Alysa Martin continued her impressive day at the plate driving in two more runs in the fifth inning on a right field single, advancing to third on an error.
Abbey Walsh then added another homerun for the Hawks in the fifth inning to bring the final score to 13-4.
Game 2 (W, 16-5)
Marissa Adams threw 5.0 innings in Game 2, allowing five runs on nine hits to improve her record to 7-5 on the year.
Emma Taylor put John Wood on the board in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly to right field, but the Hawks would answer with seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on seven hits and two errors committed by the Blazers.
Laura Phillips would put the eighth run up on the board for the Hawks in the second, reaching on a fielders choice and scoring
Abbey Walsh.
John Wood's Emma Taylor would add two more RBIs in the top of the third on a two-run homerun to center field. An RBI double by Mallory Novack would score another two for the Blazers cutting the run deficit to three. The Hawks would then score eight runs in the bottom of the third to bring the final score to 16-5.
Maddie Mackey's homerun in the third brings her total on the year to eight, and five Hawks tallied extra base hits.
